Most people believe that because it donesn't contain sugar, diet soda is a safe alternative to regular soda when it comes to Diabetes. Unfortunatelly, that's not the case.
In a recent study published early this year, researchers found that
consumption of Diet soda plays a key role in the development of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes.
Researchers found that those who consumed diet soda at least daily had a 36% greater risk for metabolic syndrome and a huge 67% greater risk for the development of Type 2 diabetes.
The authors conclude that "These results corroborate findings from the ARIC [Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities] and Framingham studies and show stronger adverse associations exist between diet soda and Type 2 diabetes. Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other dietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control, and eventual diabetes."

The Dangers of Drinking Soda

There are probably thousands if not millions of people around the world are addicted to drinking soda / soft drinks. This maybe because it is very affordable, convenient and tasty. But what can a can of soft drinks do to us?
Sodas account for more than 25% of all drinks consumed in the United States. Being addicted to soda is a hard habit to break.
Here are some reasons why you should start controlling your soda intake:
1. You will gain extra pounds - One can of soda is equivalent to 1 lb of weight gain per month. Every time you drink soft drinks, your risk for obesity increases 1.6 times.
2. Liver damage - Research shows that consumption of soda can lead to liver cirrhosis.
3. Tooth decay - The high amount of acid in sodas can cause tooth decay. The acid in soda is much more worse than candies.
4. Kidney Stones and chronic Kidney disease - Soft drinks contain high amounts of phosphoric acid which promotes formation of kidney stone. Research shows that drinking one quart (less than three 12-ounce cans) of soda per week may increase a person's risk of developing kidney stones by 15%.
5. Diabetes - Sodas have high amount of sugar which can eventually lead to diabetes.
Other negative side effects include impaired digestion, heart burn and heart disease. So next time you open that can of soft drinks, think and ask yourself. What can this soda do to my body?

Are you eating healthy foods?

We sometimes have the wrong perception about healthy foods. Sometimes, we are influenced by the advertisements on television or magazines about the foods that we are eating. Are they really healthy foods?
Nutritionist Cynthia Sass, shares her knowledge about psuedo-healthy foods. Here are some of them:
Diet Soda
Ads tells us that diet sodas or sugar free sodas is one of the fastest way to shed off that extra pounds. But according to Dr. Sass, "For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese tied to a 2 can a day habit is 57% compared to 46% for regular soda drinkers." Diet sodas can actually increase your drive to take in more sweets.
Pretzels
We think that pretzel is a healthier substitute for chips. However, pretzels are made of white flour striped of its vitamins and anti-oxidants and they are packed with carbohydrates.
Don't be fooled with the nice labels or advertisements, what seems to be healthy, might not be healthy after all.
