Tooth Regeneration

Tooth fillings may be a thing of the past, and tooth regeneration is the wave of the future. Scientists are beginning to find just the right solutions of chemicals to rebuild decayed teeth, rather than merely patching their holes with gold or ceramic fillings.

Enamel, the outer covering of teeth, is made up of tiny complex mineralized crystals. Underneath the enamel, is dentin, which is composed of a hard clay material reinforced by fibers of collagen. Because teeth are made up of these components, they are very susceptible to erosion by acids found in the food we consume. By putting a layer of the solution on individual test teeth, scientists have already been able to remineralize some parts of the teeth. The challenge is to get the crystals to regrow throughout the dentin. Even though the regrowth of entire teeth is still in the future, there has been much progress in the help of getting rid of tooth decay.
