Tummy Flab Exposes Middle-Aged Women To Higher Risk Of Stroke

A new study that surfaced at the American Stroke Association's (ASA) International Stroke Conference claims women between 45 and 54 are now three times more likely that men aged similarly to face stroke. Some years back, the same researchers reported women in this age group were twice as likely as men to get stroke. The threat is real and primarily stems from the fact that middle-aged women put on more tummy fat. Although the risk factor appears to be modest, at only 3%, still that's enough cause for concern. However, certain remedial measures like exercising regularly and including more fruits and vegetables into the daily diet can help significantly.

Study Finds Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Slow Cellular Aging

Several studies conducted by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, have shown improved survival rates for individuals, with cardiovascular conditions, who adhered to a diet rich in marine omega-3 fatty acids. Although the exact mechanisms effecting this protective effect isn't properly understood, it has something to do with length of telomeres, DNA sequences at the end of chromosomes that shorten with the replication and aging of cells. Longer telomere length, to put it simply, means reduced cellular ageing. Further, studies conducted by other researchers show a positive correlation between telomere length and intake of multivitamins and green tea.

Eminent personages from different walks of life, even generals and admirals, extended her their wholehearted support. Obesity has assumed alarming proportions in the US in recent times, emerging as the primary reason why applicants fail to make it into the armed forces. In the past 30 years, one in three otherwise healthy children in America has suffered from obesity, rendering them unfit for military service. Additionally, these kids are going to have a restricted life span too because of the attendant problems that obesity brings in its wake. The best way to nip the problem in the bud appears to be concerted action to rectify nutritional programs at the school level.
